The Box of Books
My packaged arrived, containing all the books I purchased during my time at Mises University. There were so many books, I’ll measure them in weight.
Manhattan - Part Three
There were numerous things I had in mind to do in the early morning of Monday 22 August: watch the Today Show at the NBC Studios, or head downtown to Wall Street and watch the morning traffic. However, I decided to sleep in and start the day at about 10 am.
Manhattan - Part Two
The heavy morning rain was cool and refreshing, but I was searching for a taxi from the sidewalk. Of course there were cars parked right outside the awning at the doors of the Hotel Beacon, so I decided to hail a cab standing directly beneath the clouds. This strategy was both fun and fruitful. Suitably drenched, the driver and I loaded my luggage into the boot, and after finding shelter in the back seat I said, “Take me to the Hilton, New York”. I had waited to say those words.
Manhattan - Part One
Leaving Pennsylvania on the afternoon of Monday 15 August, we headed north towards New York City, to enter Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel. Proceeding up the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) through the City of Elizabeth, and passed Newark International Airport towards Manhattan. Coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel, my first impression was: Wow! These roads are really cut up and the buildings look run down and unloved! Isn’t this meant to be high price real estate? Some of the most valuable in the world? Straight away, I suspect government intervention … hmmm. OK, so that was pretty bad, probably the worst section of road I saw.
Auburn, Alabama to Washington DC
Auburn, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia are in different time zones. When it is 10 am in Auburn it is 11 am in Atlanta. Had I been aware of this I may not have missed my 1 pm Delta flight from Atlanta to Orlando. Of course my $310 ticket was non-refundable, and non-changeable. When I told my sorry story to the lady behind the Delta check-in desk she was able to sell me a ticket on the next flight for only $25, bargain.
Mises University
After more than 31 hours of travel, I was searching for the Mises Institute Campus. With the help of Google maps and my new friend, the Chevrolet Classic from Avis, I had found West Magnolia Avenue, but where was the Campus? There was Bodega, Ander’s Bookstore, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Rooster’s to the right, as well as endless Auburn University to the left, but where was the Mises Institute? Stopped at a Donahue Drive red light, I looked ahead to the right beyond Momma Goldberg’s Deli. Could this be the place I am looking for? Was my hunt now over? When will this light turn green?
The View From Auburn, Alabama
My first morning in Auburn, Alabama and I forgot some local customs. When I saw the car driving directly towards me, I realised I was driving on the wrong side of the road. Thankfully, the expression on the face of the passenger in the other car was more shock and not so much anger. I sheepishly drove on. What could I say? She probably thought I was an irresponsible American rather than a jet lagged Australian tourist.
